On July 29, 2008, Free Thinkers Forum,
Bangladesh organised a Round Table Discussion at the VIP
Lounge of National Press Club on ‘The Importance of
Local Government Election in the Emergence of Honest and
Competent Leadership’
The discussion meeting was chaired by
Dr Maniruzzaman Miah, former Vice Chancellor, Dhaka

Commissioner was the Chief Guest of the
round table discussion.Mr Jahangir Chowdhury, Chairman,
Free Thinkers Forum, Bangladesh presented the concept
paper and also conducted the discussion meeting.
Eminent personalities who participated in the discussion
include, Dr Mahbub Ullah, Chairman, Department of
Development Studies, Dhaka University, Dr Abdul Latif
Masum, Former Vice Chancellor, Patuakhali University of
Science and Technology, Professor Abdun Noor, Chittagong
University, Professor Mir Kamal Chowdhury, Asian
University, Dr Tofael Ahmed, Specialist on Local
Government Affairs, Mr Sadek Khan, Renowned Columnist,
Mr Amanullah Kabir, Senior Journalist, Mr Mostafa Kamal
Mazumder, Editor, Daily New Nation, Mr Alamgir Mohiuddin,
Editor, Dainik Naya Diganta, Mr Mahbubul Haque, Managing

Most of the speakers emphasised upon the local
government election, which in their views is the basis
of development rural Bangladesh. They also expressed
their opinions to the tune that the goal of emergence of
honest and competent leaders may not be achieved over
night. They believed that continuous effort in this
regard would help in achieving the mission. However,
some of the participants expressed their opinions to the
effect that the Parliament Election should be held in
the country before the Upazilla Election. Last, but not
the least the audience enjoyed the discussion of Dr
Tofael Ahmed, the maximum, who appeared to be conducting
devoted research works on the subject matter of the
round table discussion.

Bangladesh Perspectives’
The discussion meeting was chaired by Dr (Professor)
Mahbub Ubullah, Chairman, Department of Development
Studies, Dhaka University. Dr Hasan Mohammad, Professor,
Chittagong University, presented the concept paper (copy
enclosed). Mr Jahangir Chowdhury, Chairman, Free
Thinkers Forum, conducted the discussion meeting.

Most of the speakers admitted that over the years
government after government in Bangladesh allowed the
criminal practices in politics to grow. They also
expressed their opinions to the tune that the
criminilisation of politics ultimately led to a
disastrous situation like the one of October 2006. They
however highlighted that politics in Bangladesh cannot
be made free of criminal practices overnight. It will
take time to achieve the desired result. Finally, most
of the speakers were optimistic that through free and
fare electoral practices the democracy in Bangladesh
would gradually take appropriate shape. |
